Making money as a writer is no different to running any other type of business. To be successful you have to sell lots of goods.
Having a writing business can be much more profitable than any other type of business because you can create one product and sell it over and over again.
Most businesses, whether they’re a brick and mortar store or an online store, can only sell a product once.
But you can write a book once and sell unlimited copies AND the sales can all be automated so you only have to set it up once and it will keep working for you while you go on writing your next book.
And with Amazon services such as Kindle publishing for ebooks and Create Space for POD print books, it makes the whole publishing process fast and simple.
Compare being a writer to any other person trying to sell things online.
If you had a “normal” store, you’d have to stock it with plenty of products so that customers can not only choose what they want to buy, but hey can come back and buy more.
And you should be thinking along the same ones with your writing store. You need to have plenty of products (books) for sale so that customers can choose which one to buy and come back for more.
It’s no good just writing one book, putting it up for sale and hoping to make a full-time income from it.
Your writing store needs to sell more than one item, just like any other store.
You also need to ‘ship’ products daily. This means marketing your books as often as possible and in different ways and different places, because no one will shop at your store if they don’t know it’s there.
In other words, you need to treat your writing as a business if you want to earn money.
And it all starts with writing.
Sit down every day and work on your next book, and then the next one, and the next one.
Don’ just sit there with only one or two books in your online store. That’s not enough.
And if you don’ t market your work, your store will stay in the virtual back alleys of the internet where no one will find it.
Instead you want to move your store onto the main street where it can be seen by everyone passing by. This means getting it onto the first page of search engine results.
So if you’re currently sitting in an almost empty writing store, it’s time to stock it, so start writing.
Writing is your business so start treating it like one.
