Don’t Plan to Write, Plan to Publish

By Administrator

laptop and writing books

I read and hear from writers all the time who say they want to be full time book writers, yet they never do it.

Why not?

Well, there could be 3 reasons:

Lazy. Some people say they want to do something but they never do it because they are too lazy to make a start. It’s easy to sit down with a pad and pen and plot out the tasks you need to take and in what order to get something done and then do it. But lazy people simply won’t do it. They’ll call it procrastination. But it’s really just laziness.

Scared. Some people are just too afraid to take a chance and do something different. They think that others will ridicule their work or they’re worried they’ll make mistakes or that their books won’t sell. The way to get over this is to simply get over it and get on with what you want to do.

Snobbery. Yep. Some people are just plain snobs and think that if they self publish their work it will make them look less in the eyes of others than if they get a publishing deal from a publishing company. But all you have to do is look at how many remarkably successful authors are self publishing now to see that snobbery is a waste of time (which it always is, in any situation). A good example of a successful self published author is Joe Konrath who is a huge advocate for self publishing.

The thing about publishing is this; prolific writers make money. And it’s not just because they write, but because they’re not afraid to publish. They just keep on writing and publishing. They’re just to busy to worry about what others may or may not think of them or whether they’re following the latest trends or not.

And if you want to be successful too then you need to start thinking like a publisher.

Plan what books you want to write.

Learn how to write fast by doing it. The more you write the faster you’ll get. Or take an course and learn how to outline better so that you can write faster.

You need to think and act like a publisher.

Publishing is the most important part of writing. You can’t sell your books from your computer hard drive. And you can’t sell any books at all if you don’t write them.

Being a self published author is all about publishing, not just about writing.

So think and act like a publisher and turn your writing into a business.

The books won’t write themselves so get a plan and get on with it.

There’s an old Japanese proverb that says ~ You have to stand by the side of the river a long time before a roast duck will fly into your mouth.
