Hi
I’m Ruth Barringham and welcome to Writeaholics.net.
My History
I was born in the UK in the 1960s and while I was still extemely young, my family emigrated to Australia. We lived in Sydney for several years before heading north to beautiful, sub-tropical Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland.
In the 1980s my parents moved our family back to the UK . Then in 2006 I returned to live in Brisbane with my own family.
In my spare time, when I'm not writing, I love to spend time with my famly and our pets. I also enjoy sewing, knitting, walking, reading, growing vegetables and eating potato chips.
My Writing Career
I began writing professionally in the 1990s when I was living in Lancashire in the north of England.
I have ALWAYS loved writing for as long as I can remember, so I decided to take a writing home study course. While I was doing the course I had a moderate amount of success with having stories and articles published in national magazines.
I carried on writing part-time for the next few years until I could earn enough money from my writing to be able to "quit the day job".
Then in 2005 I left my job in retail so that I could take up writing full-time. Since then I have also taken courses in web design, book publishing, SEO writing and copy writing.
In 2006 when I returned to Brisbane it disrupted my regular writing somewhat, although at the same time I did manage to acquire a job working on 2 Australian Travel guides for a UK publishing company.
In 2007, after my life had settled down into some form of normality again, I established my own publishing company Cheriton House Publishing Pty Ltd and I now publish my own books and books of other writers in the Horror/Sci-fi/Fantasy genre and Self-Help books.
Along the way I’ve also set up several web sites which I regularly write for and I’m always working on my next books. I also publish a monthly newsletter for writers at Writeaholics.net.
My career as a writer has been both enjoyable and profitable but I do work hard and I always approach my work professionally.
My advice to anyone who wants to be a successful writer is to learn as much as you can, work hard and always present yourself as a true professional. And NEVER undervalue your writing talent.
As a writer it’s also wise to have as many different streams of income as you can, especially passive income from writing books and web site income. (See http://newonlinecourse.net for more information about becoming an online writer.)
Being a successful writer means always learning and applying what you know. The world of writing is always changing and moving on and never more so than today.
The internet has really changed the way that writers work. And it’s also made it easier and much more profitable.
